He is currently the most successful Serbian conductor in the world.
Aside from an ardent passion for the arts in general and music in particular, Aleksandar Markovic’s interests spread wide over the field of literature, self-development, nutrition, and sport: his hobbies include kitesurfing, skiing, and snowboarding.
Aleksandar Markovic belongs to a select group of Serbian artists who have achieved significant and renowned international careers. In three decades since leaving Serbia, maestro Aleksandar Markovic has gone from a teenager with a lifelong vocation idea, student of Leopold Hager at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Herbert von Karajan Fellow, and winner of the First Prize at the 7th “Gregorz Fitelberg” International Conducting Competition to the position of Chief Conductor of Tyrolean State Theater and Orchestra in Innsbruck, Music Director and Chief Conductor of Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, and Music Director of Opera North in the UK.
He has appeared with leading ensembles and opera houses in Europe and around the world, such as Seattle Opera, Sinfonia Varsovia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, RTE Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, National Orchestra of Belgium, Munich Radio Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Malmö Symphony, the Qatar Philharmonic, Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Halle, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, DSO Berlin, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Concertverein, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Janacek Philharmonic Ostrava and Kremerata Baltica.
At the start of the 2021/22 season, he takes the position of Chief Conductor of Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra in Novi Sad, Serbia, a European Capital of Culture 2022.
Aleksandar is passionate about supporting the next generation of musicians and has dedicated time to supporting various projects in this respect. Notably, he has worked with the symphony orchestra of the University of Music in Graz and has been a jury member and lecturer of the Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival in Vienna.
